www.shanemeadows.co.uk British director Shane Meadows’ new film This Is England was recently given an 18 certificate by the British Board of Film Classification, much to the dismay of the films production team who believe the film should have a 15 rating. This news item looks at this issue and shows some new clips of the film.

The North West New Wave is campaigning for the introduction of a Voluntary Unrated 18 Certificate.
Independent columnist Rhodri Marsden was on Nemones show yesterday and gave our petition a really good mention on BBC 6music.
The link for both Nemones show and our petition can be found on the North West New Wave Twiiter page, simply search for NWNewWave!
If you agree with our campaign please take a moment to sign our petition and to help spread the word!

stupid
no one give a fuck about age for films — its rediculus
The BBFC giving a film an 18 certificate doesn’t stop anyone from seeing it. If anything it makes people under 18 more interested in seeing it. This Is England does contain lots of very aggressive swearing (e.g. “You fucking paki cunt!”) and strong violence. It’s 18 certificate was not frivolous. And if people think the UK is bad, look at Ireland. The Cider House Rules had a 12 certificate in the UK, and an 18 one in Ireland (because it contained references to abortion!).
That woman is a wang.
I saw it when i was 14 and it never did me any harm, same with all the classic british movies like snatch, lock stock etc.
The BBFC just incredibly out of touch. I mean, how old was Sue Clarke? 60? MAYBE 59?
I don’t think the violence or the language was the real issue the bbfc had with the film. They just can’t be shown to discriminate against the racism issue in the film. They think that an immature mind would see this film agree with some of the racist propoganda in it. I know that the films overall message is against racism but there are some influencial pro-racism speeches in it.
“that, we are told by the public, is unnaceptable for under 18s”- What public? everyone i know thinks its ridiculous that you (until very recently) could buy fags at 16 but not watch a fucking film! its a film, people need to understand the differnece between reality and fiction!
haha yeah i watched it on youtube. i thought it was awesome.

Great film.
Making the certification high will only make younger people watch it. Do they not think younger people will appreciate the message? Younger people are the ones who need to see this stuff, and being young doesn’t make you thick. Again, these morons who make ratings misunderstand knoledge and intelligence.
in Germany it´s for 12
how dumb are some fucking people these days!?
and if u fail, you illeagly download it
just because it says 18 doesnt mean only 18 are gonna watch it!
it just means its funnier trying to get into the cinema
